Ask a Biologist (and Then Ask Another)

I joined Jeremy Ferguson of Tutt Land Company on The Southern U podcast to tackle everything from quail feed to small-acreage deer management.

This week, I had the pleasure of joining Taylor McMurtrey and Jeremy Ferguson on The Southern U podcast — a show that’s quickly becoming one of my favorite listens when I’m bouncing between farms or burning daylight on the tractor. Jeremy is a fellow wildlife biologist, habitat consultant, and broker with Tutt Land Company, and this episode was part of his ongoing “Ask a Biologist” series, where he invites guests on to answer listener-submitted questions.

We covered a lot of ground — from my thoughts on supplemental feed, how many deer you can responsibly harvest on a small acreage tract, to my take on the new medicated quail feed designed to treat parasitic eye worms.

As with any good conversation, there were moments of agreement, a few raised eyebrows, and plenty of real-world stories from the field. If you've ever wondered what two habitat-obsessed biologists talk about when the mics are hot, this episode gives you a front-row seat.

Hopefully, this is the first of many appearances on The Southern U. Jeremy is doing great work highlighting habitat management efforts across the Southeast. I appreciated the chance to share my perspective as a consultant and a biologist.

Also — if you missed last week’s Whetstone Weekly, now’s a good time to catch up. With fawns and turkey nests on the ground, I made the case for not mowing in May (and explained why timing matters more than good intentions).

If any of these topics sparked questions about your land — or you’re ready to get serious about managing your property for better hunting and better habitat — let’s talk.
